Review of Macadamia Production in Malawi: Focusing on What, Where, How Much Is Produced and Major Constraints

Macadamia is an essential commodity crop in Malawi. The nuts are a lucrative and used for household consumption, income generation among farming families as foreign exchange earning at country-level. production Malawi has increased significantly recent years. the seventh top producer of macadamia valued £23.5 million, with global market share 3%. In 2018, country was fourth-largest exporter that were £18.2 million. majority (90%) this grown by large commercial estates smallholder’s only contributing about 10% total production. However, smallholder sector vital future growth country. Further, Malawian smallholders consider low-input returns per unit area (£10.7 kg?1 ha?1), it thus high potential poverty reduction wealth creation these families. This paper, therefore, explores: (i) historical current trends nut Malawi; (ii) analyses country’s value chain focusing on farmer contributions; (iii) discusses constraints informed policymaking. We conclude synthesis sub-sector provides understanding contributions to Malawi’s economic improvement livelihoods.
